How it started
World War II was fought between the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, Japan) and the Allied Powers (Britain, United States, Soviet Union, France). Most of the countries in the world were involved in some way. It was the deadliest war in all of human history with around 70 million people killed. |
Only 20 years after the last biggest war (world war I), the Second World War was now the biggest and deadliest war in history, involving more than 30 countries and ending in more than 50 million military and civilian deaths (with some estimates as high as 85 million dead).
